Burning sage is handed down from Native American civilizations and is considered a spiritual practice that removes negative energy. It involves the burning of white sage and other sacred herbs or holy woods such as palo santo.

Here's what we recommend: burn your sage first to get rid of any negative energy you want to clear, then subsequently burn the palo santo for new, positive vibes. Or hey, if you're just into the way it looks and want to give it a place on your shelf, we get it!

Fun facts about Sage and Palo Santo:

A 2007 study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacol that linked burning sage to reducing airborne bacteria. “Research has shown that burning herbs or medicinal smoke can purify the air and [eliminate] up to 94 percent of harmful bacteria for up to 24 hours. It also has both antimicrobial and antibacterial properties” that keep viruses, bacteria, and even insects away.

Also, a 2016 research for the University of Mississippi demonstrated that white sage is rich in compounds that activate certain receptors in the brain. These receptors are responsible for elevating mood levels, reducing stress, and even alleviating pain.

Palo santo (Bursera graveolens) is a tree that’s native to Peru, Ecuador, and other South American countries. It grows in dry tropical forests and produces very fragrant resin. In Spanish, palo santo means “holy wood.” For thousands of years, the wood, resin, and oil have been used for medicinal purposes. It’s mainly used to treat pain and stress. It is also believed to remove negative energy and bring love and good fortune.
